ISR believes pool fences, supervision, and pool alarms are important parts of a necessary multi-layered approach to drowning prevention. However, traditional lines of defense break down, and the over 4,000 drowning deaths per year bear a grim testament to the fact that traditional approaches are missing a key component: the child. ISR’s core conviction is that the child is the most important part of a drowning prevention strategy and our over 300,000 ISR graduates and 800 documented survival stories are proof that children can save themselves. Children are curious, capable, and have an uncanny ability to overcome obstacles like pool fences; at ISR we take that ability and teach them skills to potentially save themselves if they find themselves in the water alone.
ISR’s unique results are achieved through fully customized, safe and effective, one-on-one lessons with only your child and the Instructor in the water. ISR’s unique results are achieved through fully customized, safe and effective, one-on-one lessons with only your child and the Instructor in the water. What your child will learn, and the way he or she will learn it, is what makes ISR so different from traditional swimming lessons. Always putting safety first, ISR emphasizes competence, which leads to confidence, and provides the foundation for a lifetime of enjoyment in and around the water. What your child will learn depends on his or her age and developmental readiness, but in all cases, at minimum, your child will learn to roll onto his or her back to float, rest, and breathe, and to maintain this position until help arrives.
Infant Swimming Resource’s Self-Rescue® swimming program is scheduled 5 days per week, Monday through Friday, for 10 minutes each day for an average of 6 weeks. All lessons are one one one with a certified ISR instructor. We do encourage a parent or caregiver to participate in lessons on occasion, and especially when your child is skilled so you know how to practice after lessons end!
Some instructors offer weekly or biweekly maintenance lessons after the initial session is complete to continue practicing new skills. Refresher lessons are extremely important in continuing and maintaining your child's ISR Self-Rescue® skill development. Children grow and develop rapidly from infants to toddlers and young children. This development process represents improved strength, coordination, and a more finely tuned cognitive ability. In accordance with this growth, children enrolled in ISR return periodically to participate in Refresher Lessons.

"Kelly Turner is truly a rockstar! My child had a fear of putting his face in the water and after only four lessons she had him comfortable and successfully putting his face in the water." Amanda M
Lessons for a 6-12 month old focus on teaching the child to roll onto their back to float, rest and breathe, and to be able to maintain this life-saving position until help arrives.
Lessons for children 1-6 years old focus on teaching the swim-float-swim survival sequence. Children learn to swim with their head down; roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe; and roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool, where they can either crawl out or until they can be rescued.
MEET TRACY WHEELER
My name is Tracy Wheeler, and I became an ISR Instructor in December of 2017, and a Master Instructor in August 2022. I live in Pickerington with my husband and three boys. I have a Master's degree in Physical Therapy, and I've practiced PT in skilled nursing facilities around central Ohio and surrounding areas until May 2020, and since then, I've been focusing on ISR. My ISR journey began in late 2009 when a friend told me about the program that was being offered near us, and that I should try it out. I knew nothing about ISR and had never seen the videos of the babies floating fully clothed. There was an Instructor being trained in a hotel near us, and we were able to take advantage of a Master Instructor being close by, and my oldest son at 8 months old was soon learning to float! After he finished the program, I knew that being an Instructor was something that I wanted to do. But working as a PT, and then becoming pregnant with two more children in the next 3 years hindered my opportunity to take off work and go through the extensive training of becoming an ISR Instructor. Finally in early 2017, I made the decision that now was the time! I finished training in November 2017. My kids have all gone through the ISR program, and all of them began classes between the ages of 8 months to 15 months, and they are now confident swimmers, at the ages of 11, 13 and 15 years old. I am looking forward to reaching families in SouthEast Central Ohio that haven't had the opportunity to have an Instructor near them until now! I can't wait to get in the pool and teach your child how to float and swim and be safe in the water!

MEET KELLY TURNER
I am Kelly Turner, a Certified ISR Instructor. I live in Granville and I am a mom to 5 amazing kiddos! I was a pediatric nurse at Nationwide Children’s Hospital for 12 years before deciding to stay home with my kids. I learned about ISR from a cousin who teaches in Cleveland and once I observed a few lessons I knew this was a job I wanted to have! I became an instructor in March 2020. I love everything about ISR..from the obvious of teaching children lifelong survival swim skills to just becoming a part of these children's lives and watching them grow, learn, and gain such amazing confidence! I feel very strongly about drowning prevention and I feel so blessed by every family that trusts me with their children to help make ISR another layer of protection in ending childhood drowning.

MEET SARAH BERLIN
My name is Sarah. I have 3 kids and was an ISR mom for 6 years before making the decision to become an instructor. I first heard about ISR from the Today Show after my first son was born. We were always around water, so I knew this was exactly what we needed for him to be safe. Jen Tyson was our instructor, and I was amazed by what my kids were able to learn.
ISR has blessed my life in many ways, but mostly by giving my kids confidence in the water and myself peace of mind, knowing that they were safe. I knew that I wanted to give that gift to other families by becoming an instructor.
What I love most about my job is watching the confidence grow and develop in my students as well as seeing the proud smiles on each of the parents faces.

MEET BRITNEY SMITH
I grew up spending my free time at swimming pools all year round. I was begging to jump off the diving board before I was 2 years old. My grandmother signed me up for my first swimming lessons and I’ve loved the water ever since. My first job was a lifeguard at my community pool and I continued lifeguarding through college. Once I graduated college I went on to work corporate jobs and never truly felt fulfilled. It wasn’t until I was pregnant with my first son that I discovered ISR. I spent many hours researching and watching videos of these small children with these remarkable life saving skills in the water and I knew I wanted that for my child. As soon as I could I signed up my oldest son for his first session and within that first 6 weeks I knew I found what I was meant to do. Not only do I feel fulfilled in my work, but I help keep children safe and give them confidence in the water and help ease their parent’s minds. There truly is nothing better than seeing a child master these life saving skills that ISR teaches. I am now a mother of two beautiful boys who push me to do my best every single day that I’m in the water with my students and I could not be more grateful for my job and the opportunities it has given me to help save the lives of children in my community.

MEET LISA WYNKOOP
My name is Lisa Wynkoop. My husband, Bob, and I grew up in the Canal Winchester area and we are the proud parents of two very busy teenagers. I am a Physical Therapist Assistant and Certified ISR instructor serving the Canal Winchester area and surrounding communities. I started my career as a PTA working in a sports clinic. Over the years I've worked in numerous clinical settings but I always missed working with kids. In 2021, I was at a point in my career where I was considering making a change. That's when my friend Tracy Wheeler suggested I look into becoming a Certified ISR Instructor and the rest is history. I absolutely fell in love with ISR!
I am so thankful to be able to teach infants, toddlers, and children how to swim and self rescue. I absolutely love watching their confidence grow from their nervousness on the first day to being able to jump in and swim-float-swim across the pool!
I am so happy that you are looking into ISR lessons for your family. I hope to welcome you into our ISR family soon!

MEET AMY ROBINSON
I am Amy Robinson, an early childhood educator and swim instructor in the Bexley and downtown Columbus area. I began my swimming career at 4.5 when my parents signed me up for a summer league swim team with my older sister.
Swimming competitively through my childhood taught me lessons of strength, endurance, humility, friendship and confidence. Having strong young swimmers gave my parents peace of mind and it kept our bodies busy and our fingernails clean.
As years went on, the pool continued to be my home. As a lifeguard, swim instructor, swim coach, swim team parent and Masters team swimmer - I am most at home in the water and find my people there.
When my oldest daughters were too young for standard swim lessons but needing instruction, I searched high and low for rescue lessons like ISR. Over and over again I was told there was nothing available in Columbus. I was frustrated and ended up teaching them myself until they could start swim team at age 5. I spent my years in the classroom and swimming for fun and exercise, while they grew up. They are now young adults.
When my youngest daughter was born the search for infant rescue swim lessons was much more fruitful. Even while having my own small swim lesson program in the summers, ISR was an important first step to keep our youngest safe in her own backyard.
I was an ISR parent for my youngest for 3 years before taking the leap and applying to become an ISR certified instructor myself. I had the opportunity to train with my daughter's instructor, Tracy Wheeler and I am thrilled to bring the skills, confidence and love of water to more families in the Columbus area. I will be teaching in Bexley during the school year, and from my own backyard near Bexley during the summers. I look forward to seeing you in the pool!

MEET AMBER WINNESTAFFER
Hi friends! I'm Amber Winnestaffer. My husband and I reside in Pickerington with our daughter and nephew (and niece when she's home from college). I'm a PTA by trade serving the Home Health community. I have a passion for health and wellness and helping others!! Our family found ISR through a friend in 2021. Being a water family who spends the summers on the lake, I knew this was something my daughter needed. That same friend continued to tell me over and over how ISR was meant for me. My daughter learned from Tracy and Lisa who I continued to be in contact with regarding the opportunity to become an instructor myself and then one day it happened! I was able to be trained by the wonderful Tracy myself! The skills and confidence my girl has in the water at her age is incredible! I want to be able to serve our littles and their families in water safety and confidence to provide them with that peace of mind I have found.
LOCATIONS: Blacklick, Pickerington
MEET BRITTANY CARROLL
I am Brittany Carroll. My husband and I have three wild boys that have all been through ISR lessons themselves! We live near the Hocking Hills and I'm excited to be offering lessons in the Kingston area. Shortly after my children started their first ISR sessions, I knew becoming a Certified ISR Instructor was something I wanted to do. I have always been a big advocate for water safety for my own children and when I witnessed the power of ISR and the skills my kids learned, I like to say "The Stars Aligned!" With the support of my family, friends and community, everything fell into place allowing me the time and encouragement to complete this extensisve program and providing me an indoor space to teach year round! Being an instructor has been an accomplishment and lifestyle that I am pouring my whole heart into. Not only continuing to teach my children to be safe around water but to be able to teach ISR Self-Rescue skills to other children in my area brings me so much joy!

ISR is the product of over 50 years of research and development in the aquatic survival instruction for infants and children field. ISR's primary focus is to teach young children to become productive swimmers and floaters in any depth of water. Rather than learning how to blow bubbles and sing songs in the water, ISR students learn skills they would need to use in the event of a real life drowning scenario. The goal of ISR to turn our students into "aquatic problem solvers" by showing them how to deal with any situation they may get themselves into. ISR greatly increases a child's chance of surviving an aquatic accident, even when fully clothed!
Although many programs for young children focus on a water orientation approach using songs and games, this type of approach does not teach your child any of the skills necessary for survival. The Parent & Me approach teaches children that water is FUN without teaching them any meaningful skills. Remember, water will not be fun for your child if he/she is unskilled and finds himself alone in it. This type of approach may actually make a child more vulnerable to drowning as this teaches children to believe water is a safe and fun without any understanding of the skills needed for effective swimming. ISR lessons encourage water competence first, which leads to confidence, promoting a SAFE foundation for a lifelong enjoyment of the water.
YES! ISR instructors have taught over 7 million safe, effective lessons! The safety of each child is the highest priority of each ISR instructor. Prior to participation each child is registered via an online registration process and each child’s health and developmental history is evaluated by a team of medical professionals to ensure safe participation in lessons. Each lesson is private, the instructor’s attention is focused completely on your child. The ongoing safety of each child is monitored throughout the weeks of lessons by tracking each child’s Bowel, Urine, Diet, and Sleep (BUDS). This is reviewed prior to each lesson. If the instructor feels any of these key health measurements are not as they should be, the length and pace of a lesson is adjusted, or in some cases, the lesson is canceled for the day. Many pediatricians who are educated about this program and its high safety standards promote and refer their patients to this program.
Although 10 minutes may seem like a very short time, each lesson is private and each student is getting the undivided attention of a highly trained instructor. Lessons, though short, require a great deal of work and concentration from our students. Given ISR students’ age, asking their bodies to perform this exercise for an extended duration is dangerous and can lead to over exertion in the water. Before deciding that a child can't possibly learn anything in such a short amount of time, please come and observe one or more ISR lessons! Contact your instructor to set up a time to observe!
ISR lessons are scheduled 5 days a week because swimming is a sensori-motor skill, like crawling, walking, or riding a bike. To master sensori-motor skills, bodies must practice them regularly and consistently. Imagine if your child had only practiced crawling one day a week... it would have taken him months, if not years, to finally master the skill! Our five day a week lesson structure is proven through research to be the most effective schedule and allows ISR students to develop the muscle memory, body competence and confidence to self-rescue in an aquatic emergency.
The ISR instructor training program is the most rigorous in the industry and includes a minimum of 60 hours supervised in-water training, plus education and testing in subjects such as child behavioral and developmental psychology and extensive training in physiology. Each potential instructor is carefully screened through extensive interviews before acceptance into the training program. ISR Instructors are required to complete annual re-certification training requirements to maintain their certification status.
Breath holding skills are taught in the first lesson. Instructors shape breath control using highly effective positive reinforcement techniques. Breath control is a necessary part of safe survival swimming lessons. If any program claims children learn to hold their breath by "drinking or swallowing water," please know this is not true! Every ISR student is taught how to hold their breath, even our very youngest students at 6 months old, and ISR instructors will never continue underwater submersions with a child until breath control is obtained.
Crying is a form of communication for children as they grow. They cry when they are hungry, bored, tired, etc. When introduced to a new person and a new experience such as ISR lessons, many children cry at first. Your child will be looking to you to develop his or her attitude toward swimming and ISR lessons. Students whose parents or care takers project positive attitudes and offer verbal praises will typically stop crying within 3 or 4 lessons or as their skill level progresses. Remember, competence leads to confidence which in turn leads to smiles! Crying will not bother the ISR instructor or interfere with your child's ability to learn.
There is an important difference between being afraid and being apprehensive in an unfamiliar environment. ISR is not like traditional swim lessons; it is a drowning prevention program that teaches survival swimming. Your child may not happily skip to his or her ISR lessons each day at first, but that's okay. Sometimes as a parent, you make sure your child does things for his or her SAFETY, like receiving vaccinations and wearing a seat belt, because you know they are important. The same can be said for ISR. FUN can be defined as when SKILL meets CHALLENGE. Once competent in their skills, most ISR students cannot be dragged away from the pool!! They are having entirely too much FUN. When you learn about ISR, you know this is the most important level of protection you can give your child to prevent drowning. If fences, supervision, and alarms fail, your child's skill is an additional measure of protection.
We do not want students to initially associate the water with the love, attention, and affection of the parent. It takes incredible concentration and objectivity to teach children how to respond to an aquatic emergency and our research shows that parents often find it too difficult to be objective and effective with their own children in the water. Parents are invited to join a lesson once their child is skilled.
Flotation devices are the most dangerous thing to put on a toddler in the water for a number of reasons.
ISR recommends students return bi-annually or annually for refresher lessons depending on the student's age, growth rate, skill and confidence level. The goal of ISR refresher lessons is to help your child adjust his/her new body size and weight to his/her existing skill level. While NO program can "drown proof" your child, ISR lessons typically have a 94-100% retention rate up to one year later. Refresher lessons are important because children change so much both cognitively and physically during the first 4-5 years of life. It is important that their aquatic skill and abilities grow with their bodies. Maintenance lessons are also offered by some instructors. Please ask yours.
Because 86% of children, who fall in the water, do so fully clothed, we want our students to have experience with such a situation. If a child has experienced the sensations of being in the water in clothing prior to an emergency situation, he/she is less likely to experience panic and be able to focus on the task at hand. If you have ever jumped in the water with clothes on, then you know that there is a significant difference in weight and feel with clothes as opposed to a bathing suit.
Absolutely wonderful experience. Lisa was so patient, kind and fantastic with my two very energetic kiddos. Our 3 year old truly woke up each morning excited for lessons - and while our 2 year old took until the last day of class to open up and smile - his progress has been even more amazing to see! We can’t recommend ISR and Lisa as our instructor enough. Thank you! Mindy G
Britney Smith has been amazing! She understands my daughter’s sensitivity to loud environments when the pool area is busy and is patient with her, adjusting the lesson as needed. It has been incredible to watch my daughter’s confidence, skill, and enjoyment grow. Today my daughter told me she wished she could stay in the water longer when her lesson ended, which is amazing progress from my initially hesitant little one!
Tracy Wheeler is patient and has great time management. 10 minutes is not very long but she does a great job a utilizing lesson time especially when a child gets distracted. Tracy does an excellent job at and making water safety fun for the child. Kaitlyn S
Kelly goes above and beyond to connect with her students. She’s very patient and communicates well. Her lessons are timely and she works to accommodate schedule conflicts to the best of her ability. We appreciate her thorough instruction, as we’ve seen our daughters confidence grow over the past few weeks. Her passion to save lives is undoubtedly her motivation and it shines through in her work. Great instructor. Deana B
Lisa has been an absolute blessing through this experience. She is gentle, kind, effective and encouraging. We are so happy to have her teach our baby life saving water skills! Rena P
Britney is fantastic! She is very up front about what to expect at each lesson and beyond, she’s caring, and nurturing, all while comfortably pushing my kids.
Tracy is amazing! My child loves his lessons with her and he’s learning very quickly! Megan L
Sarah is such a warm, caring, dedicated ISR instructor. Our daughter, Ellie, has special needs including low muscle tone requiring leg braces as well as some social anxiety but she loved Sarah right from the first lesson! It was important to us that Ellie was safe around water due to her unsteady gait- knowing she can get to the pool side if she trips is such a relief. Ellie loves swimming and eventually mastered the roll back to float/swim sequence which even, inadvertently, strengthened her core muscles over the 7 weeks of lessons! Her swimming confidence is so high now and she can’t wait to continue refresher courses as well as keep up with her big siblings this summer!
Tracy is incredible. No one can demands my kiddos attention like her. He adores her and we talk or Tracy at least once daily (if not more) at home. We even pray for our thankfulness for this experience! Colleen R
Thank you Britney for everything, I feel such a huge relief and lift of anxiety knowing that my children have water safety skills and have built their confidence in the water. I never would have thought when we started 6 weeks ago that they would come this far. We can never thank you enough for teaching our kids these life-saving skills!! K. Lee
Tracy Wheeler does a great job teaching the skills needed for my 2 yo to swim-float-swim. She is encouraging and confident and unfazed by his initial protests. Now he begs to see Miss Tracy every day! It is amazing to see is progress in such a short amount of time. Amanda S
Kelly Turner really focused on helping our daughter learn to float and continue to build those skills. It was amazing to watch our daughter grow and have confidence that she can float if she needed too. We can't thank Kelly enough for the peace of mind!
Britney was great! She was patient, calm, and an expert in adapting her teaching methods and plans based on our daughter’s nervousness and anxiety at being in a noisy atmosphere without her glasses. She also partnered extremely well with us in coming up with strategies to meet our child’s needs, and was very effective at teaching our daughter the ISR skills she needed.
I am a classic helicopter mom. I had watched videos of ISR classes and was unsure honestly I would be able to watch my child take the lessons, but from day one I felt safe with Tracy. I never felt he was in any danger and I always knew she was doing what was best for him. I’m very thankful for the lessons. Amber P
Our experience with ISR has been phenomenal. Our instructor Britney was one of the major reasons why we enjoyed these session so much! From the initial inquiry all the way up until the last class Britney was extremely helpful, answered any questions we had, calmed my "mama nerves" and was very dedicated to accomplishing our daughters skill and did so with patience and a smile on her face daily. Our daughter learned so much and we are beyond impressed- she went from being nervous and timid to having confidence in herself and enjoying going to class daily. We are so grateful for ISR and Ms. Britney and are so glad we decided to pursue lessons. Our son is signed up for the next session and we have no doubt that our experience will be anything less. The Jenkins Family
We absolutely love Lisa! My children love working with her. This whole process is amazing and I am so glad we signed up.
Tracy and ISR are AMAZING!! Best money ever spent!!! Rhiannon P
Tracy Wheeler has a special gift. My daughter had tears and was a challenge nearly every class, but Tracy’s patience, kindness and dedication to helping my daughter learn never wavered. I’m so grateful to Tracy for the life saving skills she has taught my daughter, “Thank you” will never be enough. I will absolutely recommended Tracy/ISR to all of our friends, family and neighbors with young kids.
I love how patient she is! Her redirection is perfect for my child’s needs and I love how she is constantly trying new things in order to grab their attention and get them more interested! Reece H
Sarah far exceeded our expectations, she was informative, caring, and we could see our son trusted Sarah through the entire process. He now has the skills, comfort, and confidence to complete the sequence from floating and swimming to safety at 2 years old. We highly recommend Sarah and confident she will provide your children with life saving skills too!
Kelly was a wonderful, kind, and communicative teacher. She hugged my kids when they needed it, she pushed my kids for further skill development when they needed it and she helped us do what we intended to do...build a foundation of water safety. IsR is gentle yet skill affirming, even if you child cries for 5 weeks like mine...they still want to swim, they still love Kelly and they still learned something very new and valuable at a young age.
Tracy Wheeler is absolutely amazing and incredibly patient! My son loves coming to see her every morning. We can’t say enough great things about her. My son has gone from 0 swimming skills to being able to swim and float with great confidence. Jaclyn M
Kelly Turner has been phenomenal. She has been so patient with my toddlers. I will never be able to express how grateful I am for her & the piece of mind she has given me by teaching my boys the skills of survival. Devon H
Tracy Wheeler has been so great with my two girls (2 & 4 years old) we didn’t have much experience in the water prior to ISR and my oldest didn’t even like getting her face wet in the bath tub! By the 3rd day she was swimming under the water! We are so very thankful to have found Tracy & ISR!
Kelly Turner was fantastic. Her patience level is top notch and her excitement once my boys finally turned a corner and utilized the skills she was teaching, was genuine. I have recommended her to anyone that would listen! Sarah B
Britney is a wonderful instructor who I would recommend to anyone. Neither of my sons (ages 3 and 2) had any prior water experience. The progress they made after completing their first course with Britney blew me away. Beginning on the very first day she put me at ease with her calm, friendly personality. She explained the process every step of the way and made sure I knew the goal and expected outcome for each lesson. Britney tuned in to my sons’ very different personalities and learning styles to instruct them accordingly.
We’ve been very blessed to have such a compassionate, patient and devoted instructor. As a parent, this training can be hard to experience and Kelly Turner has always made it a point to be sure I (the parent)was comfortable with the training. The training was thorough and our daughter undoubtedly has achieved growth that I never knew she was capable of. We will now have peace of mind that our child will be safe around water and we wholeheartedly thank Kelly from the bottom of our hearts for that. Deana B
This is our 3rd year with Miss Tracy. Our daughter suffered from a near drowning accident in 2018. The skills, confidence and peace these lessons have given us is beyond words! We are so thankful for ISR! Kristina K
